What is OFF-Grid Solar?
OFF-Grid — also known as a stand-alone power system (SAPS).OFF-Grid systems work independently of the grid but have batteries which can store the solar power generated by the system. The system usually consists of solar panels, battery, charge controller, inverter, mounting structure and balance of systems
How does it work?
It works by generating electricity from solar panels and using it to charge a solar battery via a charger controller. That electricity is then converted using an inverter so that it can power the home or business appliances. By saving the electricity in a solar battery, it is possible to run home with solar energy, even at night or during times when there is less sun exposure.
Benefits of OFF-Grid Solar:
No access to the utility grid /Frequent grid failure: Off-grid solar systems can be cheaper than extending power lines in certain remote areas.
Become energy self-sufficient: Living off the grid and being self-sufficient feels good. For some people, this feeling is worth more than saving money. Energy self-sufficiency is also a form of security. Power failures on the utility grid do not affect off-grid solar systems.
On the flip side, batteries can only store a certain amount of energy and during cloudy times, being connected to the grid is actually where the security is. You should install a backup generator to be prepared for these kinds of situations.
